GEORGE BARTLETT MCNIEL (31 Aug 1844 - 10 Feb 1905) Served in Co K 53rd
NC Infantry. Enlisted 3 Nov 1862 at age 18. Wounded at Gettysburg 1 July
1863, captured at Spottsylvania 12 May 1864, spent the rest of the war as
a POW at Elmira, NY. Paroled and released 29 Jun 1865 at Point Lookout,
MD.
KEOKUK NATIONAL CEMETERY - LEE COUNTY, IOWA
WILLARD POLLARD - ( - 14 Jul 1862) - Enlisted 12 Aug 1861 at Kirks
Grove, Alabama. Wounded at 4 pm at the Battle of Shiloh in the leg. Captured
and sent to U.S. Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa. Died 14 Jul 1862 at the U.S.
Hospital in Keokuk from gun shot wound in left arm.
OAK SHADE CEMETERY – LINN COUNTY, IOWA
LEWIS DAVID BAKER – (1843 – 28 Sep 1931) – Enlisted 1863 in Co C 8 th KY Infantry, at Covington, KY when he was 20 years old. He fought in numerous battles during the war but only carried two small scars, one on his left hand and the other on his right ear.
WOODLAND CEMETERY - POLK COUNTY, IOWA
GEORGE FRANK JARRETT - 15 Jun 1842 - 22 Nov 1925 Buried at Woodland Cemetery,
Polk Co, IA. He resided in Catawba County and enlisted on Mar 1, 1862, Co
D 23rd NC Infantry . Wounded at Chancellorsville, VA May 2-3 1863. Returned
to duty prior to July 1-4 1863 when we was wounded in the back and captured
at Gettysburg, PA. Hospitalized at Gettysburg until transferred to David’s
Island, New York Harbor July 17-24, 1863. Paroled at David’s Island and transferred
to City Point, VA, where he was received Sep 27, 1863, for exchange. Returned
to duty in Jan - Apr 1864. Captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA May
12, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout. MD until transferred to Elmira, New
York, Aug 10, 1864. Released at Elmira on Jun 19, 1865, after taking the
oath of allegiance. Move to Des Moines, IA after the war.
BROOKLYN CEMETERY - POWESHIEK COUNTY, IOWA
CHARLES B. LINEWEAVER (1846-1918) Served in the 11th VA Cavalry, Company
I. Drafted in 1864 at age 17, Lineweaver served with the Army of Northern
Virginia throughout the remainder of the War Between the States. Lineweaver
was with the Confederate Army at its surrender at Appomattox Court House.
GRUNDY CENTER CEMETERY - GRUNDY CO, IOWA
JOHN FRANCIS LYNN (9 Apr 1847 - 7 Nov 1928) Served in the 43rd VA Calvary
Regiment and was a member of Mosby’s Battalion. He enlisted at about 16 and
was assigned scout duty. He was captured at Snicker’s Gap and sent to Harper’s
Ferry, two weeks later taken to Ft McHenry and then down the bay to Point
Lookout, and from there was sent to Savannah GA where he was exchanged Nov
4, 1864. He then returned to his company and served until the surrender of
Lee, when he went to Winchester where he was paroled. He obtained the rank
of sergeant.
PLEASANT GROVE CEMETERY - DES MOINES CO, IOWA
ALBERT H NEWELL (28 Mar 1840 - 29 May 1865) First enlisted for one year
8 Oct 1862 discharged by reason of disbandment of the regiment for reorganization
9 Dec 1862. Enlisted 21 Mar 1863 at Springhill, TN in the 2nd KY Calvary
(Woodward’s) for 3 yrs later changed to duration. He was captured 5 Jan 1864
on the Tennessee River while trying to rejoin his unit. He had been on leave.
He was a prisoner for 1 yr 4 mo & 24 da when he died at Ft Delaware Prison
waiting to be released. He was buried at Jersey shore but his body was moved
to Pleasant Grove Cemetery about a month later.
SHERIDAN CEMETERY - POWESHIEK COUNTY, IOWA
PHILLIP HEISHMAN - some records show Philip Hishman - (May 29, 1838-August
8, 1916) First enlisted on August 20, 1862 in Company D, 62nd VA Mounted
Infantry, in Hardy County, Virginia. Soon moved to Co. I, 18th Virginia
Cavalry. Heishman was taken prisioner at Winchester, Virginia, Jan. 3, 1864.
Taken to Camp Chase and transferred to Fort Delaware on March 17, 1864.
He was assigned to Division 18 (barracks assignment) while at Fort Delaware.
Heishman was released on June 20, 1865 on taking Oath of Allegiance to the
United States. He was a private.
ST PATRICK'S CEMETERY - TAMA COUNTY, IOWA
STEPHEN WHITTY - (17 Mar 1840 – 16 Sep 1906) - Private August 10, 1861. Appointed 4th Corporal June 12, 1862; 3d Corporal October 3, 1862. Captured, Kennesaw Mountain, Ga. June 16, 1864. Released, Camp Morton, Ind. May 23, 1865 .
WASHINGTON CHAPEL CEMETERY - BLACKHAWK CO, IOWA
HIRAM DAVID TILLER - (1845 - 15 May 1924) - Enlisted on 27 Jul 1861 at Alvis Farm, Mercer Co, VA. by Lt Colonel John S Carr for 12 months. He is listed as a private in Company B 30 th Battalion Virginia Sharpshooters. On the company muster roll dated 1 Nov 1862 for Sep & Oct 1862 he is shown as a deserter. Also Company muster roll dated 31 Dec 1862 for Nov & Dec 1862 shows him as a deserter. These listing as a deserter are probably in error since his enlistment was for 12 months and he is found in Co A 30 th Battalion Virginia Sharpshooters listed as a private enlisted on 30 Jun 1863 by Capt Hoffman. He is shown present for the muster roll dated 31 Aug 1863 for Jul & Aug 1863 and the muster roll dated 31 Dec 1863 for 31 Aug to 31 Dec 1863.
